Romantic Times Magazine is the leading information source for the romance novel industry. Romantictimes.com needed a website that featured thousands of author biographies, book information and reviews. The client needed a back-end system that could store all the information and deliver it quickly to customers who visited the site. In addition, the client also required a way for users to purchase the books from barnesandnoble.com using Barnes and Nobles' affiliate program.

SD constructed a relational database using Oracle 8 that stored all author, book and review information. SD also set up a staging area where reviewers could work on reviews scheduled for publication the following month. In order to increase speed and lower server stress, SD implemented a Perl-based publishing system. The database and publishing system were integrated in an Apache server environment. SD used frames to allow users to purchase books at barnesandnoble.com without having to leave the site.
